MIGRAINE

Description

Similar to a severe headache but with worse consequences and symptoms.
It is believed that around 8% of the population suffer from it, and the majority of sufferers are likely to be female.
Migraine is one of the most common complaints that a doctor is likely to deal with.

How it is caused

Typically, a migraine occurs after a stressful event, ranging from school exams, hormonal changes, job interviews, emotional traumas or even through food allergies etc.
Normally, the blood vessels feed the brain in a steady and controlled manner.
In migraine sufferers, the blood vessels suddenly contract, feeding the brain a quick gush of blood - resulting in the effects of a migraine.

Areas affected and symptoms

Classic sufferers experience visual disturbances which indicates the beginning of the migraine, it is then followed by nausea which leads to a throbbing headache.
Symptoms do vary from person to person, but common indicators can include dizzy spells, white spots, blurring of vision, throbbing headache, stiff or aching neck, etc. migraine always manifests itself in the neck and head region.
In severe cases vomiting may occur.

Treatment and prevention

Treatment is still basic, involving the use of `paracetamol` or `aspirin` to alleviate the symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no cure for migraine.
In severe cases, the doctor may prescribe a specialised medication such as `ergotamine` or `antiemetics`. A prophylactic treatment may also be an option to discuss with your doctor.

Preventing migraine from happening is like trying to stop a dog from barking.
You can only try your best to avoid it, but you will never exactly know when it is likely to occur, unless you are a clairvoyant. If you happen to be fortunate to know what is causing your migraine... try to eliminate it immediately.

Can massage take place?

Yes, massage can take place as long as a skin test is performed and the sufferer does not feel severely sick or nauseous. Lavender is useful for alleviating the pain.
Whe you feel the onset of a migraine, lie down...apply neat lavender and rub continuously onto the forehead and temples in a dark room, for around 10 minutes.

Useful Addresses

Did you know that a survey was carried out in 1979, revealing that 21% of the members of parliament suffered from migraine, too much paperwork I presume!
